New York rental car and Woodlawn Cemetery

Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries you can visit with your New York rental car. It has been serving the New York area since 1863 and is the resting place of some of the nation's most accomplished artists and architects.

Plot the past

The Woodlawn Cemetery was founded in 1863 when a group of New Yorkers decided that they needed a burial ground that was easily accessible from Manhattan. This cemetery is located online 30 minutes from Manhattan by train from Grand Central Station, making it very convenient for families to visit. It is also very convenient to visit with your New York rental car. The cemetery was designed as a "Rural Cemetery", which at the time were established outside of the city and were highly landscaped with marble sculptures. The cemetery also encouraged people to have a centerpiece memorial and matching footstones. This look makes the cemetery look grand, and also makes maintenance easier for workers. More than 300,000 people are buried in the cemetery, but some of the more famous people include John Russell Pope, James Gamble Rogers, Cass Gilbert, John LaFarge, and Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Take a walk

The Woodlawn Cemetery welcomes people to walk around the grounds. You can even grab a map when you enter with your New York rental car from security. If you are interested, you can also arrange a tour of the cemetery where you can get to know more about the history and residents.

Plan your visit

When you visit the Woodlawn Cemetery with your New York rental car, the main entrance is at Webster Avenue and East 233rd Street in the Bronx. You can also get here by subway by taking the #4 train (Lexington Avenue) and take it to the end of the line, which is Woodlawn Station. At the base of the station, you walk about ½ a block to Jerome Avenue and the entrance is on the right. You can also take the #2 or #5 train to 233rd Street Station. Cross Webster Avenue and the cemetery is on the left. They are open daily from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Get to know the Bronx

The Bronx is the northernmost borough you can visit with your New York rental car. Interestingly, this is the only borough that is located on the mainland rather than an island. The area that is currently The Bronx was first settled in 1639. In 1898, the amalgamated City of New York was created and included The Bronx as one of its boroughs. The area underwent rapid growth after World War I as the subway allowed people to move freely within the city. Many of the settlers in the area were of Irish, Italian, and Jewish origin. Interestingly, during Prohibition bootleggers and gangs were rampant in the area. The area was known for its high crime rates and speakeasies.
