The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a new type of museum that you can visit with your New York rental car. The Bronx Museum was founded in 1971 by a group of local residents to bring visual arts to the Bronx. Today, it is the only fine arts museum in the borough. The permanent collection focuses on contemporary art by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American descent.

Important artistic accomplishments

When you visit with your New York rental car, you will see works by artists who have lived or worked in the Bronx and those artists for which the Bronx has been critical to their artistic development. Some highlights that the Bronx Museum include "The Latin American Spirit" (1988), an examination of the role played by Latin American artists in modern and contemporary art; "Division of Labor: Women's Work in Contemporary Art, 1970-1995" (1995), on the shifting discourse on gender roles; "Urban Mythologies: The Bronx Represented Since the 1960s" (1999), on how the Bronx has been represented in art, film, media, and popular culture; "Game Show: Installations and Sculptures by Willie Cole" (2001); and "One Planet Under a Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art" (2001), on the transnational impact of hip-hop culture on contemporary art.

The museum is open Saturday through Monday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
