New York City Rental Car and a St. Albans Overview

St. Albans is a residential community in Queens that you can visit with your New York City rental car. It is located between Linden Boulevard and Farmers Boulevard, as well as Jamaica to the southeast and Springfield Gardens and Laurelton to the northeast.

Set back into the past

Part of the land that is now St. Albans was once a land grant to Dutch settlers in 1655. Like much of the surrounding area, it remained farmland and forest for more than two centuries. By the 1800s, there were four plantation families in the area that made up the eastern portion of Jamaica Township. But by the 1890s, St. Albans began to emerge from the farm community. Street lights illuminated what is now Linden Boulevard and Farmers Boulevard while new shops developed around the lone store in the area.

Get to know the area

St. Albans Golf Course, which you cannot visit with your New York City rental car was built in 1915 and has hosted a number of rich and famous golfers, including Babe Ruth. The Depression forced the owners to sell to the government, which was then made into a hospital in 1950.

Get crazy

Jamaica is a neighborhood in Queens that you can visit with your New York City car rental next to St. Albans. Jamaica Avenue was an ancient trail used by Native Americans from as far away as the Great Lakes who came to trade skins and furs. For many years, Jamaica fell into a state of neglect as it suffered from "white flight" in the mid-20th century. However, major improvements have been made since then, with big box stores moving into the area, making business more profitable. Soon brand name stores, movie theaters, and many others followed, developing a diverse retail community where you can shop today with your New York City car rental. Crime is also way down, so you can feel safe when visiting with your New York City car rental. Today, the economic development councils in the area are working to make it a premier business center in New York City.

Part of the development of Jamaica includes One Jamaica Center, a mixed-use commercial center that was built in 2002. When you visit with your New York City car rental you will find an Old Navy, Bally Total Fitness, Gap, and 15-screen theater.

Find a new favorite dish

Glendale has a number of great restaurants to try with your New York City car rental. German restaurants are the most renowned here, namely Zum Stammtisch and Von Westernhagen's. Zum Stammtisch is regarded highly in many of the guide books, even though it is located in the outer boroughs, where not too many guide books go.

St. Albans is a small residential community in Queens with a number of larger communities surrounding it to visit with your New York City car rental.
